Reading Louis Rodriguez' blog dated February 21, 2009 on his blog located at http://www.luisjrodriguez.com/blog/ is our major reading comprehension assignment.

During the first week of our Options Class at Los Angeles High School's Adult Education Program students were assigned Mr. Rodriguez' blog as part of a pre-test to find out the reading comprehension level of each student.

Next we are going to write letters to Mr. Rodriguez, to invite him to speak to the Options Program at Los Angeles High School, so that the students can prepare interview questions and then actually meet this leader of the youth social justice movement.

Wow! We've only got 3 more weeks of intersession! It's time to buckle down and focus on passing this class.

This week we're focusing on study skills for tests; how our brain works when we are anxious during tests, and what we can do to relax and improve test scores.

We're also continuing to analyze "Animal Farm" by Orson Wells, and we're learning how to write essays made up of five paragraphs.

Let's keep reading our books checked out from the L.A. High Library - try for one hour per night. Bring your books to class so you can read it if you finish an assignment early.

Last, we'll be filling out Los Angeles Public Library card applications which your parents need to sign, in preparation for a field trip to the Memorial Library across the street.

An important milestone for LAUSD has been met! On September 22, 2008 Tonya Mandl, Teacher Advisor with the California Instructional School Garden Program, published the "USING SCHOOL GARDENS AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL TOOL" available on the LAUSD website.

This document includes detailed standards-based instructional ideas across the curriculum in Instructional School Gardens.

This important policy will lead the way for all schools to incorporate Instructional School Gardens on every campus.
